Criterion D

Criterion D:

The problem with Facebook is the privacy issues and people not having a full enough understanding of how much privacy they have and what the public in general can view on their profiles and what information they can access. The public not understanding or knowing is the main issue and Facebook need to create a solution to help their members understand about privacy when they join. There are always terms and agreements that should be read when joining however, most of the public find it unnecessary and think it takes up too much time to read the whole agreement.
A solution to this problem would be for Facebook to create a new process when joining the site so that the person joining has to go through a number of steps where they are viewing the profile that they can make and so they can view what non-friends and the general public can view. The person joining can then decide what they want accepted friends, and the general public to view. This is also a process that current members should have to go through; because the main issue is with the members who are unaware of how much of their information is being viewed by the public.
This would solve the privacy issues as joining members would know what the public would be able to view, and current members would have the chance to change what on their profiles could be viewed.

Criterion A

This portfolio addresses the issue of how social networking is abused, by users on the internet. A type of this abuse is people’s privacy on the internet and the fact that it isn’t quite clear to the users what privacy rights they have. An example of this abuse is when the social networking site facebook opened up to the public allowing people who are not members of facebook to view some of the members information. (“Facebook Opens Up to the Public” 2007)
The IT system which is involved with this issue is the internet, and it is an important system to society as society uses it for communication, to run business and to spread views, ideas, and knowledge. The internet is growing and more of the public are using it and social networking is especially expanding.
The internet is used in both positive and negative ways. A way in which the internet is positive is that it allows people to have fast access to resources online, helps people communicate, and allows people to shop online. A negative issue with the internet however, is that the public can quite easy access other people’s privet information. This is because people give out information on the internet quite willingly not realizing that anyone with internet access could access it. Social networking is the main way in which people can access information as when you sign up for a social networking site there are certain forms you fill out and people do not understand the ways in which such information can be abused.
